The Influence of Media

MEDIA LITERACY is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media. Being media literate helps one better understand complex messages received through mass media.

Mass media is the greatest outlet that influences the culture at large. The Church should be aware of the many messages being spread through our entertainment and media.

Since Christ has sent us to be a light and win souls, it's important that we understand the points of influence in society.

"Be not conformed to the [systems, customs, traditions, patterns] of the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds that you may prove what is that good, acceptable, and perfect will of God." - Romans 12:2

Daily Time Spent With Mass Media

Social Media
Print Media

Social Media - SOCIAL MEDIA TODAY, Television - NY TIMES , Music - SPIN, Print Media - STATISTA

These numbers are generalized, however if we were to go into detail by daily routine, the numbers will be far greater and magnifies the impact of mass media on society. For example:

  • The average American adult spends around 11 hours per day on media, mostly at work, majority of the media being music. - STATISTA

  • Teens spend about 9 hours per day online, mostly social media. - CNN

Imagine the quantity and quality of content being poured into our society through these forms of mass media...

"Are we being formed by mass media or the word of God?"- Dan Andriacco
