Judged For Being Different

Updated: Sep 11, 2018

My name is Martravious Munn and I live in Memphis, Tennessee. I am 15 years old, and I am a Mime Praise Dancer. I started dancing when I was 5 years old but as I got older and understood my calling from God, I took it seriously. I grew up in a violent community in south Memphis. I was used to being around a lot of shooting, killings, and gangs. I wanted different for myself. I always knew I was better than what my surroundings were.

I was always judged for being different, in this generation you have to fit in to be cool; be apart of gang and do things that wouldn’t please God. I really didn’t want to tell anyone that I was a dancer and worshiped God everyday because I was in the mindset where I knew I would lose friends or I wouldn’t be cool. God kept the people that really supported me by my side.

"Who the Son sets free is free, indeed." -John 8:36

I get to help other students at my school who want to draw closer to God. I help them to be different, to be leaders and not followers. I believe that if this generation would grow in God, we would be the Head and not the tail. God has given me a gift that empowers people and develop them to want to change, or step outside of the box and be different. I thank God everyday for this gift that He has given me even though I’m not perfect, I will work to please God and better this generation.

“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." - ‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭4:12‬ ‭
