Kanye West, a highly talented musician, an often emotional, and intriguing thought-leader had "church" at Coachella on Resurrection Sunday (Easter). I'm sure you've seen the footage by now which was viewed awkwardly through a focal "peep hole" screen. I'm not going to simply report on this, as many news outlets have already done that, but I want to angle this in a biblical perspective.
I watched a report of this topic on Youtube from a Christian in the media industry and their perspective challenged my thought process. He was celebrating this act of worship. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing it... I often find it awesome when highly-influential celebrities mention Jesus or listen to worship music. Similar to Chance The Rapper when he decided to go on a sabbatical and read the New Testament. And also when Justin Bieber decided to give his life to the Lord.
When it comes to these types of situations, we do get excited and hopeful for a turnaround in their future. But I also believe that we run with it so easily without applying biblical truth, which only leads to misconceptions. We give credit to God probably on the wrong things. We start assuming that "God is using them", or "God is in that." When He might not be involved at all. I'm not saying that Kanye West was wrong for hosting Sunday Service, but I am saying that God's children should be more discerning and biblical in our assessment of these events.
There are two perspectives regarding this event that has roused Christians.
God is using Kanye West to reach people.
God is not using Kanye, and this is powerless.
Let's take a quick look at both of these perspectives in light of the Word of God.
"God is using Kanye West to reach people."
My first thought when this comes to mind is, "Does someone have to be saved to be an instrument for God? Will God really use anyone?"
No, a person does not have to be saved for them to be an instrument, however, it depends. For a particular moment in time to help God's people, a sinner can be of great help. Remember Rahab, the prostitute, who helped the two spies sent by Joshua to spy on the land of Jericho. (Joshua 2) She helped them because she and her people feared the children of Israel; they knew that God was with them. She knew that God was the true God of Heaven and the earth. And it's because of this one act of faith for God's people, that she was spared in the invasion of Jericho, and even had her name mentioned in the Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11!! 😩
I also had a friend who helped me in a desperate time during a separation in my previous marriage. She was not interested in Jesus Christ, but she gave me instructions I needed when I separated from my husband. She said, "something kept me up and I needed to tell you this." It was everything I needed to hear at 2 a.m in the morning! As we can see, sinners can help God's people, if He so wills it. But can sinners help sinners? Can God use a sinner to reach other sinners? What message does this person have that can change someone else's current situation if they have not been helped themselves? We don't know Kanye's heart, nor do we know his eternal destination, but by judging his fruit, what can he be used for to reach people?
50,000+ people were at his Sunday Service. How do you think God could've used Kanye to reach 50,000 people? You could say, well, they were led to worship God by singing gospel music. They had a good time with the choir, they sounded amazing. Thousands of them probably don't go to church, so they had it brought to them. Thousands of them probably don't care about church or "Easter", but they joined Kanye in his celebration. You could also say that Kanye actually gave some glory to God on the day His Son rose from the dead when he could've just promoted his next project. These are pretty good statements for this perspective and they are most likely true. Music alone doesn't save the soul, which is what God cares most about. At most, it could soften and prepare their heart to receive the Word. Let's check out the next perspective.
"God Is Not Using Kanye, This Is Powerless."
The reason that God could not be using Kanye, is first, God has a reason and a purpose for everyone. Rahab, a sinner, helped God's people invade Jericho out of fear and reverence. Kanye West decided to sing and remix gospel songs at Coachella on Easter. The reason this could be powerless is because it is a form of godliness and lacks power to save souls. Whenever God is working through someone, it is for the advancement of His kingdom; the saving of souls.
'holding to a form of [outward] godliness (religion), although they have denied its power [for their conduct nullifies their claim of faith]. Avoid such people and keep far away from them. ' 2 TIMOTHY 3:5 AMP
Worship is a form of godliness, it's an outward expression of our love for God that is first expressed inwardly. We cannot have true worship without it first being an inward process. Kanye West hosted a worship service, an outward form of godliness, without the power of godliness. The power of godliness is the Truth of Jesus Christ. 50,000 people worshiped with him, without the power to save their soul, therefore one can say that it was just an outward religious act that is powerless.
God is not seeking sinners to worship Him, He is seeking people who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. Jesus said, 'But a time is coming and is already here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit [from the heart, the inner self] and in truth; for the Father seeks such people to be His worshipers. God is spirit [the Source of life, yet invisible to mankind], and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” - JOHN 4:23-24 AMP
Sinners do not have the Spirit or the Truth, therefore they cannot worship God the way He desires to be worshiped. He is not interested in their worship, He desires for their inner selves to be transformed by the power of the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ. Only then will they be able to worship Him. 50,000+ souls were hanging in the balance of life and death and there was no one sent to preach the Good News of Christ to them, even on Easter.
Yes, DMX prayed at the service, but did anyone share what Jesus Christ's resurrection actually means? Where were the celebrity preachers who mentor these rappers? Were they not invited to share a word? Music alone doesn't save a soul, it's the Spirit of God convicting the world of sin, but first they must hear the message.
But how will people call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how will they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher (messenger)? ' ROMANS 10:14 AMP
God loves each and every soul dearly who attended Kanye West's Sunday Service Coachella performance. It is not His will that any of them perish, but receive salvation and everlasting life. He is not concerned with outward forms of religion, He is very concerned with the hearts of the people. We can only hope that some of them will actually want to know more about Christ Jesus. I'm praying for Kanye, he broke down at the performance and I'm hoping that God is touching his heart and that he joins us in the race for eternal life. I also hope that these two perspectives have challenged your view of God and lost souls. It's the very reason why Jesus Christ came to earth, died, and rose on the 3rd day, for the lost souls that God loves. Let us apply biblical truth to the world around us, and not have the mentality that "anything goes". God is counting on us to shine our light and have moral courage in a dark world.
