Are there anymore Snapchat users? If you're still one of them then I'm sure you've found out about the new transgender filters. This particular filter transforms your face to the opposite sex, making a woman a man and vise versa. Instagram Comedians like KevOnStage have already had their fun with it.
Snapchat is consistently losing users due to the same effects being available on Facebook and Instagram. This transgender filter was most likely their attempt to reach out for more downloads and returning users; needless to say, it was a bit of a success. However, many articles are showing that the transgender community wasn't all too thrilled about the filter, while some think it is shining a positive light on them.
What does this mean for the Christian? Should we join in all of the fun? Is this a harmless trend? The LGBT agenda is fierce and they have a plan. There has been much controversy from parents in the Virginia education system due to school officials failing to request permission to teach their elementary-aged kids about homosexuality, and issues like these are increasing around the country.
Of course, there's always the accusation that Christians are "homophobic" if we have a problem with the LGBT agenda. Anytime you don't agree with something, expect to get labeled. 🙄 We are not "homophobic", we are simply taking a stand for what we believe is truth, and that is Christ-centered ethics and moral.
Believers should not see these trends and filters as harmless entertainment, but we must see them for what they are: tools to promote sin and rebellion against God. Tools that are easily taken lightly because people are having fun with them. Our Bible says, "Be sober-minded, be watchful for the devil prowls around like a lion seeking someone to devour. So resist him." - 1 Peter 5:8
It may look like all fun and games, but even with our apps Satan is always seeking to trap someone in this flawed world system. Anything that God calls sin should be taken seriously and shouldn't be named among His people. (Ephesians 5:3) If we play around with this stuff, we are helping them promote the sinful agenda and helping Satan lead more people astray. I read a post from a transgender person and they praised how this new Snapchat filter is helping people make decisions about transitioning. They explained that this new filter is helping them see themselves in a new light and they are discovering that they are meant to be trans.
Church, do we see how much influence a simple app filter can have on millions of people? And do we still think it's okay to join in all of the "fun"? The Bible clearly states that, "If anyone wants to be a friend with the world then they make themselves an enemy of God." (James 4:4 paraphrased) If we truly had love for the Transgender and LGBT community, we wouldn't make fun of the tools used to keep them in bondage. Our hope is that they will see themselves as made in the image of a Holy God, not through the lenses of a Snapchat filter that parades their wickedness.
We are light bearers and we have no fellowship with the works of darkness. Media is one of Satan's subtle ways to blind the minds of even God's people all in the name of "entertainment". I pray each of us will be sober-minded, cautious, and steadfast for the truth in the world today.
