The Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles is a global attraction. Millions of people from around the world travel there to see the names engraved among the greatest in Hollywood & Superstardom. People aspire with all of their heart to be named among the greats, to make an impact in this world, to be known for something bigger than themselves.
There is nothing wrong with creating a good reputation for yourself. In fact, Proverbs 22:1, "A sterling reputation is better than striking it rich..." MSG translation. Or the NLT translation says, "Choose a good reputation over great riches..." It's an honorable thing to be known for your courage, your work, or your character. An easy way to find out your impression of others is to ask. It may be scary, but it will help you grow in character.
I think we all could use a dose of humility each day, especially when it comes to building our reputation. Pride can be damaging to a good reputation because it causes us to think too highly about ourselves. Whereas extreme humility can cause us to live beneath our God-given authority.
I recall a conversation Jesus had with His disciples when the disciples argued about, "Who is greatest". Jesus' response was,
"If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all (in importance) and a servant to all." - Mark 9:35
MSG translation says, "So you want first place? Then take the last place and be a servant of all." It's something about human nature that wants to be first. Even the disciples argued about who was the greatest out of the twelve.
Jesus gave us the key to being great in Matthew 23:11 - 12, "But the greatest among you will be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be raised to honor."
When building our reputation & our "great names", we must bear in mind that we are equal beings on the earth. No one is superior to another. If you get a star implanted into the Walk of Fame, you are not more important than those who have no rewards or accolades. Your hard work & good reputation can earn you an honorable life among the greats, but in God's eyes, you are the same person as if you had nothing.
Jesus taught us that the way to get there is to serve others with all you've been given & to lift up the Name Who Is Greatest in all the earth.
