Everyone seems to have the same opinion when it comes to support. "Strangers support me more than my own family and friends. No one supports you when you're at the bottom. If you don't support then we can't talk. You're not my friend if you don't support me." And so on... I've heard this too many times and I've even mentioned a few myself. 😅
Lack of support while pursuing your dreams is a HUGE downer and very discouraging. You need prayers, encouragement, coaching or mentoring, people to show up, not to mention the financial need to actually put it all together. Sometimes you will get a lot of support in the beginning, it's always exciting when you're just starting! But as time goes on, circumstances change, and often times, more obstacles arise. The support you once had suddenly just fades away. We have some practical steps and encouragement for you as you embark on this journey.
Miss Angela Washington is a Poetess and Speaker, Founder of Angel of Words. Here is what she told us about how she supports herself:
Miss Angela mentioned that King David had to encourage himself. David and his army of men were on the hunt for the Philistines, the army trusted David, I mean he was THAT GUY; always winning battles. But the Philistines ended up invading their camp and kidnapped their families! The army of men then turned on David and wanted to kill him. What did David do in the midst of opposition? "David encouraged himself in the Lord his God." - 1 Samuel 30:6. When you feel singled out and everyone is against you, encourage yourself in the Lord!
I'll be honest, as a single Actress living away from immediate family, it has been hard working a job AND submitting auditions. It's best for actors to have a flexible schedule because you don't know when you'll get a call back, nor do you know the film schedule. It's challenging to work corporate and pursue acting, but I'm so thankful that God called me to self-employment. Of course self-employment isn't everyone's grace but I do have some tips for you that I believe can help right after this awesome advice from Christian Rap Artist, Godz Warriah.
Definitely want to make sure you are operating in God's will for your life and ask for God to fulfill His purposes by providing the resources you will need! It is no doubt that we believe God's grace will carry you into your purpose but it's also very WISE to develop a plan of action as Godz Warriah stated. Here is a practical plan of action that I am on right now that could help you get started with a solid plan...
Develop A Plan!
Pay off debt.
It's hard to put money into your dreams when you still owe people. I don't know about you, but I want God to be the only One that I owe! 😁 There is good debt and bad debt, but God wants us to achieve financial wellness. When we are well financially, we can give, save, and invest more into what's needful and important. I recommend Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University, I am following the baby steps in his Total Money Makeover series.
Earn extra income
Look, it's the 21st Century and there are hundreds of ways to earn extra money. The Gig Economy is growing fast and I'm actually apart of it lol. This is the grace God has called me to and it's helping me pay off debt and keep the bills paid at the same time. I mentioned that this isn't everyone's grace, but if you have a few hours of free time in your schedule, definitely consider giggin' for extra money! You can sign up for one of the many food delivery companies like UberEats, Doordash, Postmates, Instacart, etc. Or if you don't mind strangers in your car, sign up for the ride-sharing companies like Lyft and Uber. All of these gig jobs can pay you up to $1500 per week full time, and maybe half part-time. Do what you have to do to advance!
Reach out for support...again.
But this time, GET CREATIVE! The Bible says that, "You have not because you ask not (James 4:2-3), so maybe all you need to do is ask again. If this is the second wave of reaching out for support, then this time you need to do it better. Think of ways to make it easier for you and the supporter, what can you offer them? It would be great to give them some fruit of your labor. Here are some cool campaigns that can help:
Kickstarter - This is a great way for creatives to get funding for their creative project or idea. You can offer cool incentives to those who've donated. It also helps the supporter because they get to see where their money is going and stay updated on your goals to accomplish the mission.
Patreon - I would say that this campaign works great for long-term support, versus Kickstarter, which is mostly for one-time projects and start-ups with a deadline. With Patreon, supporters can give as long as they'd like, at the amount you'll need, on a monthly subscription. And you can also give them a first hand look and opportunity to take part in the fruits of your labor.
Let's say that you have 5 uncles and 5 aunties, if they each give you $15/month, that's $150 per month to fund your dreams. They can get real time updates on your progress and you can give them a free t-shirt or whatever you do as a craft. As an Actress, I'd give my supporters free movie tickets every few months and maybe free copies to the films I star in. 😊 Just get creative!
And lastly, always remember that
God Supports You!
If He called you to it, He will surely bring you through it and help you accomplish it! Everyone has a different path in life, sometimes God wants us to only depend on Him because our level of faith needs to increase for where He's taking us. And other times, you may have a lot of support from others, either way, God is in control and He will never set you up for failure. Christian Rap Artist, Prafit Josiah, is one of those people who depends only on God and his work ethic to pursue the call on his life, and I must say, it has worked for him:
God will never leave you HIGH AND DRY!!!! That's a word. I will close with this scripture, "For it is not your strength, but it is God who is effectively at work in you, both to will and to work, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose for His good pleasure." - Philippians 2:13, Amplified
